Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Knights
In 1901 the Charlotte Hornets minor league baseball took over the Queen City. The club, lasting until 1973, captured 11 league titles. ("Team history,") In 1902, the team became a member of Carolina League, but unfortunately folded before the close of the season. Although officially founded in 1901, the team had actually been playing since 1892. The tickets to the game at the time used to be $.25 for men and $.15 for women and children. In 1892, the Company Dilworth built a baseball park in Latta Park for the team to play at. (Kratt, 2000) In 1940, a new park was established on Magnolia Avenue and was called the Calvin Griffith Park. The park was destroyed by a fire 45 years later, in 1985. Throughout history, the Charlotte Hornets have been a part of several minor baseball leagues, such as the Piedmont League, the original South Atlantic League, and the North Carolina League in 1902. From 1937 to 1972, and from 1946 to 1972, the Charlotte Hornets were affiliated with the original Washington Senators franchise and the Minnesota Twins. In 1976, the Charlotte Knights came to Charlotte as the new club. In Spring of 2014, the AAA team will be celebrating the opening of their new stadium.
