In 1762, King George III of England claimed a part of Anson County to form a new county. He named this new county Mecklenburg County, in honor of his new wife. Her name was Charlotte Sophia and she was from Mecklenburg-Streliz, Germany. The city of Charlotte was named in her honor as well, although it was initially called Charlottetown and later changed to Charlotte. (Public Library of Charlotte)
